Sea Scouting is a part of an exciting and informative Venturing Program that the Boy Scouts of America offers for young men and women from 14 through 20 years of age. Organization As a coed for community organization, Sea Scouts build responsibility, effective character, citizenship, with mental and personal fitness training for youth. Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club Ship 9201, (i.e. Unit) was started by last year’s Fleet Captain of Sail, Jerry Virnig, became affective May 2007, and is based at PCYC in Channel Islands Harbor. Uniform and insignia Individual Ships have traditionally worn casual sports wear, US Navy or US Coast Guard uniforms. Our ship has chosen marine blue polo shirts with emblem, and beige Bermuda shorts. Advancement Advancement is a four level program providing training in: • Seamanship and Boat Handling including helmsman ship, sail trimming, radio and radar skills, anchoring, docking, and more. Opportunities include both sail and power. Below is the most recent addition to our Fleet, the 35 ft Trawler, m/v SEAL. We will enjoy bringing her up to fine sea-going condition, and our sea scouts will master the challenge of piloting a motor vessel and eventually, enjoy overnight excursions to the Channel Islands. Our Sea Scouts get more anchoring, and close maneuvering practice than many skippers because m/v SEAL also gets to go out with the race committee to set the starting line.

You will master operating our 24 ft Cal sailboat, s/v Rosie, shown here tacking into position at the starting line of the annual McCune Memorial race - in which she proudly took 2nd place.
• Vessel Maintenance - Every member of our boat’s crews take pride in the condition of our craft. As a Ship, we are responsible for the maintenance of the vessels. Sea Scouts learn the proper ways to maintain the hulls, decks, equipment, engines, rigging and gear on each boat. • Navigation and Piloting - Members learn how to read charts, plot a course, and read and follow a compass. They also learn Rules of the Road, right-of-way rules, lights, buoys, aids and hazards to navigation. • Marlinspike Seamanship -You will learn how to work with lines knot tying, splicing and sewing. • Other Skills Include safety, first aid, ground tackle, weather, galley, drill, maritime careers - and more. |
