Sailing & Racing
Kevin Miller, most recently navigator/tactician and sail maker for Dr. Laura Schlesinger’s off-shore yacht racing campaigns, will be speaking at PCYC. Kevin is presenting a talk at the next (June 10th) meeting of the Channel Islands Women’s Sailing Association hosted at PCYC.

Here's a heads-up reminder of our Four Race Events:
The Regional training race: TBD
The upcoming McCune Memorial Pacific Corinthian Cup race #1 on Saturday 3/24
plus the other two following events in the Pacific Corinthian Cup.

1. Regional training Race
The regional training race is open to anyone -- brand new racer or experienced team looking for practice. We will provide a short briefing at PCYC for skippers and crew -- then it's off to the water for a number of practice starts with the support of on-the-water coaches and volunteer crew. All this for just $10. Entry forms available 0830 on Sunday morning.

You'll be taught enough of the racing rules to understand what's happening on the course around you during your first race. If you are an experienced racer, you'll get a chance to practice multiple starts. We will have some experienced crew to loan out to skippers who are trying this for the first time, and will help new crew members find rides among the boats.

You are welcome to share this with a dock buddy who wants to try racing! This practice and training race will be held starting at 9 a.m. Sunday March 14, 2010.

At least three or more practice starts will be held. The event includes short race courses along with:
Classroom intro and skippers meeting at 0900 that morning
On-the-water coaches
Chase boats to keep the coaches close to you
Coaching over the VHF Radio
Video taped starts available for review afterwards at the clubhouse

FREE appetizers will be served for all skippers and crews at the PCYC clubhouse after the event.

Loaner crew: Extra experienced crew is available to help new boat owners and new skippers become comfortable with sail trim and rules on the practice race course.

Please notify the race organizers ahead of time so that new boats can be matched to loaner crew during the training race

2. McCune Memorial distance race (regional ASBCYC high point event). Advance registrations for the McCune Memorial are due MARCH 15th, and in addition, your boat name will be printed FREE on the series t-shirts. There is a catch -- you have to enter in order to win.

Special support for Santa Barbara boats competing for credit in the regional high point series -- McCune results will be provided over VHF or hail immediately after crossing the finish line. Santa Barbara boats will be able to turn and head right back up the coast.

There are a number of changes in the level of competition -- will it make a difference for you? Three events, three different skill sets -- ONE OVERALL CHAMPION. You'll compete in: a distance race during the McCune, a series of three short random leg races during the VCORC, a series of three short windward-leeward races during the Yachting Cup.

There is a Schock 35 now competing aggressively in the area. The McCune is the first ASBCYC high-points race of 2010, so the Santa Barbara boats will be coming down. The Chinese Flying Tiger 10 meter Superluminal has aggressively competing. The Benneteau First Fusee and the J-30 Rambunctious have been competing regularly over the past year. The non-spin fleet is growing. Late registrations start 0800 with the McCune skippers meeting starting at 0830.

What does your fortune cookie say about your chances?

These are just some of the boats and skippers who competed in the series last year:
Adios, Angry Hillbillies, Bikini Machine, Blue Star, Cheap Thrills, Deception, Foreigner, Funatic, Harmony, Iron Will, Jaded, Fusee, Perfect Balance, Rival, Rumbylowe, Rambunctious, Alcyone, Superluminal, Tortoise, Velero, Vignette, West Wing, Walkabout, XS, Zoarces, Zuma Jay

Some boats have typically participated in two of the three Pacific Corinthian Cup events. However, in order for boats to get proper credit for their excellent sailing, they really need to be involved and earn points in all three. As you know it's possible to win overall by doing well in two and at least show in the middle for the third. It's tougher to win overall with a DNS for one of the three events.

Be sure entry forms are received by MARCH 15th.
